Tips for Disputing Fraudulent Credit Card Charges

03 Jul, 2018 / By

If you have recently noticed fraudulent credit card charges on your statement, you need to know the proper steps to get them removed. Some credit card companies require you to simply call them to have charges removed, but most of them require a few more steps to be taken. If you found that someone has been charging things to your credit card that you did not know about, follow these simple steps to have them disputed and removed.

Call Your Credit Card Company

The best way to start the disputing process is to call the company and explain to them what you have found. You need to be able to provide proof that you either were not where the transactions took place, or that the signature is not yours. Either way, they will tell you your options and you can them send them the information they require. However, you need to make sure you call them as soon as the error is noticed. If you wait too long, beyond 60 days, then the credit card company is not always required to work with you to remove the charges.

Send Complaint In Writing

Once you have called them, you need to make sure you write down what you have found and how you attempted to resolve the issues, and send them a physical copy. This is one of the best ways to win a dispute over fraudulent charges, because they will then have a certain amount of time to make a decision on what you have presented them with, and react. Most companies will respond within 7-10 business days, but they have up to 30 days in most cases. Just make sure you do what you can as soon as you notice the error. If you wait too long, the company does not need to do anything about the charge, and you will be expected to pay it.

Make Your Regular Payments

During the disputing process, you are still required to pay for the charges you know you made. However, you are not required, and do not need to pay for the charges you are in the process of disputing. The credit card company basically puts these charges on hold during the process while they figure out the truth. Just make sure you do not fall behind on anything else during that time, as that will make them less likely to work with you. When you are making payments on time, they will work with you to make sure your account stays open and they make money.

Politeness Will Help You Win

One of the hardest things to do during the disputing process is to remain polite, but it is a must. You need to stay focused on the issue, point out facts, and never raise your voice or curse. No matter how the person at the other end responds to you, you must always remain in control over yourself if you want to successfully dispute your fraudulent credit card issues.

Make Sure You Follow Through

In order to dispute charges successfully, you must also follow through with the things you say you are going to do. If you say you are going to write a letter, then make sure it is done within a day of that phone call. If you say you are going to call back and check on the issue on a specific day, make sure it is done. You cannot forget these steps as they are more likely to cause you to lose out on your dispute than if you were to make sure to put these things on the top of your priority list.

If you have to go through and dispute fraudulent credit card charges, make sure you follow the right steps. You need to talk with all of the right people, send in your proof, keep your calm, and follow up with everything you say. When you do that, winning your case will be much easier.
